The first skyscrapers appeared at the end of the 19th century in Chicago. But for most people on the planet, another US city, New York, is associated with multi-story high-rise buildings. The first skyscraper - “Iron House” (Flatiron building (Flatiron Building)) - appeared in the metropolis in 1902. Now the city is decorated with 6,486 skyscrapers, whose height is more than 35 m.
Most of New York's tallest buildings are concentrated in Manhattan - a district and a picturesque island with an area of 59.1 km². This is 6 km² less than the Central Administrative District of Moscow. The height of 111 skyscrapers in New York is more than 180 m. Among them, a dozen leaders stand out. The height of the buildings includes the dimensions of the spire, but excludes the mast antenna and underground floors, if skyscrapers have these architectural elements.
10. Hudson Yards 35 | 308 m
2011 was the beginning of the project Hudson yards - The new office and residential complex in Manhattan. March 2019 was marked by a fateful event. At the intersection of West 33rd Street and 11th Avenue of the West Side - the western district of New York - as part of the Hudson Yards project, a 72-story skyscraper in the shape of a rectangular prism grew. The glass facade of the building hides many rooms:
- lobby decorated with tapestries by Helena Hernmark - a Swedish artist;
- dozens of stores;
- SoulCycle - fitness center;
- 135 cooperative apartments with two to six rooms;
- 222 spacious hotel rooms of the Equinox chain;
- spa studios, gyms for sports training and yoga;
- restaurants of the Stephen Starr chain - Starr;
- Orthopedic Surgery Medical Center.
Project author Hudson Yards, 35 - David Childs, working for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. This American architect is well-known not only among professionals. The initial project involved the construction of a skyscraper 270 meters high. The final version is 308 m.
9. New York Times Building | 319 m
In the west of Manhattan is the publisher of the world famous New York Times. The organization is located in a 52-story skyscraper The new york times buildinglocated on Eighth Avenue. Nearby are Times Square - the famous square - and the compact Bryant Park. The 319-meter skyscraper was built from 2003 to 2007. Talented specialists worked on the project: Renzo Piano, an Italian architect, and employees of the American architectural bureau Gensler.
Inside the building there are 32 elevators. Office space is not available to the public. But for everyone, the doors of the ground floor shops are open. City guests are happy to drop in the restaurants and cafes located here. The most popular establishments are: Dean & Deluca café (Dean & Deluc Cafe) and Wolfgang’s Steakhouse (Wolfgang Steakhouse).
8. Chrysler Building | 319 m
In 1930, the construction of one of the most beautiful skyscrapers in New York was completed. At the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street, the Chrysler headquarters appeared. The 77-story building was created in the then fashionable Art Deco style, designed by William Van Helen, a talented American architect. Chrysler building differs from other skyscrapers in an unusual tower. It is a seven-tier structure that reminds connoisseurs of the rims of a car model produced by the company at that time.
Although the walls of the skyscraper are made of marble, concrete, stone and steel, it gives the impression of a light structure. This is achieved through evening lighting, a 38-meter spire and bright walls. Now the Chrysler Building is a high-rise office building, where the premises are rented by a variety of companies. Not far from the skyscraper is the UN headquarters and the historic building of the Central Railway Station.
7. Tower 53W53 | 320 m
In August 2018, the seventh tallest skyscraper in New York became 53W53, where the letter between the numbers stands for West. The 77-story building is located on West 53rd Street between two avenues: Sixth and Fifth. The eastern wall of the skyscraper is adjacent to the Museum of Modern Art. The author of the project, Jean Nouvel, a French architect, paid particular attention to large windows. On the upper floors of them are well visible alleys and ponds of the Central Park. The 320-meter skyscraper is a modern residential complex and includes several objects:
- 145 apartments - from one to five rooms in each;
- a restaurant;
- a library with a fireplace;
- gym;
- spacious pool;
- wine Vault;
- tasting room;
- lounge bar overlooking the park;
- private theater.
6. World Trade Center 3 | 329 m
In June 2018, next to Memorial 9/11 Park on ul. Greenwich opened the doors of an 80-story Three World Trade Center. It used to be the building of the Marriott Hotel, which was destroyed during the September 2011 terrorist attack. The skyscraper project is the result of the work of Richard Rogers, a well-known British architect.
The original plan implied the presence of a spire at a skyscraper. But the author refused this undertaking. Now in the World Trade Center 3 there are offices and five trading floors. The interior of the building is visually expanded thanks to the windows from the ceiling to the floor and panoramic terraces. Visitors and employees use 37 elevators.
5. Bank of America Tower | 336 m
Since 2009, Sixth Avenue has been adorned with a 55-story building Bank of america towerlocated between 43rd and 42nd streets in the neighborhood of Bryant Park. The team of architects Cookfox worked on the project. Bank of America Tower is built from environmentally friendly materials. The roof of the building is decorated with a 78-meter spire. Inside the skyscraper, there are three escalators and 53 elevators. The tower uses environmentally friendly materials and inventions:
- glass that can absorb sunlight and not interfere with natural light;
- air purifying filters;
- automatic lighting system;
- a device that generates electricity;
- a system capable of storing and purifying rainwater.
4. Hudson Yards, 30 | 386 m
In March 2019, next to the 35 Hudson Yards building, a new 101-story skyscraper Hudson yards 30located at the intersection of Tenth Avenue and West 33rd Street. The project is implemented by Kohn Pederson Fox. The original plan involved the construction of a 408-meter skyscraper. Designers reduced to 386. 59 elevators work inside the skyscraper. The tenants of the premises were several large North American companies:
- KKR & Co;
- Related Companies;
- DNB Bank;
- Oxford Properties;
- Warner Media
- Wells Fargo.
On the 101 floor of a skyscraper there is a triangular observation deck. The design is superior in height to all known viewing platforms in the Western Hemisphere.
3. Park Avenue, 432 | 426 m
At the end of 2015, an 85-story skyscraper grew up in the neighborhood of Central Park, which, due to its slender square shape, was called a “Match” by local residents. Park Avenue, 432 - The official name of the building is surrounded on four sides by East 57th and 56th Streets and Madison and Park Avenue. Rafael Vignoli, Uruguayan architect, is the author of the project, which is a high-rise residential building that includes several objects:
- 125 corporate apartments;
- a restaurant;
- golf course;
- swimming pool;
- a sauna;
- Fitness Centre;
- billiard room.
2. Empire State Building | 443 m
Among the skyscrapers of New York Empire State Building has a special status. For 40 years since the construction was completed in 1931, not a single building in the world could compare with the Empire State Building in height. The world famous skyscraper, located on Fifth Avenue, remains one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. A lot of interesting facts about Empire State Building have been collected in a variety of sources:
- The main architect of the project was W.F. Lamb;
- together with the TV tower, the height of the skyscraper is 443 m;
- 73 elevators work inside;
- since 1964, a skyscraper has been lit in the evenings;
- the internal staircase has 1860 steps; running competitions are held on it;
- spacious observation platforms are equipped on the 102nd and 86th floors;
- the building played the role of an object important for the plot in more than 90 films.
1. World Trade Center 1 | 541 m
In November 2014, the tallest building in the United States grew in lower Manhattan in place of two twin towers destroyed by a terrorist attack.One world trade center. Locals call it the “Freedom Tower”. World Trade Center 1 is surrounded by four streets: West, Wiesey, Washington, and Fulton. The author of the project is D. Childs. Among the tenants of the premises, several of the most famous companies stand out:

Inside the skyscraper, 73 elevators work. At the level of the 100–102nd floors there is a viewing platform. The doors of a cafe, grill bar, banquet hall and restaurant are open here for tourists. A signal light is installed on the roof of the skyscraper. A long ray of light coming from it is clearly visible in the evenings.
The construction of new skyscrapers in New York does not stop. By early 2019, there were 18 future skyscrapers. A little time will pass, and the list of the tallest buildings in the city may change.
